When the CFO pushes for tool consolidation, it seems to be about licenses. In fact, license costs are the most visible but smallest item. The expensive part is on no invoice.

What costs visibly — and what invisibly?

Visible are licenses, maintenance and administration for every documentation, PM and ticket tool. Invisible but bigger is everything else:

• the time teams lose because the same knowledge is half-maintained in five systems;
• the friction at every interface where data is transferred by hand;
• the duplicate entry because no system trusts the other;
• and the decisions made on an incomplete picture.

Why is the largest item not-knowing?

Because seven tools produce seven partial views, but no overall view. No one can reliably say how a cross-department process actually runs.
